Good design doesn’t mean search engine friendly

Today i got question from my bos, he need my advice regarding for search engine optimization to villa owner’s website. The website looks fancy, nice design and good Flash animation as intro. The client would like their website to be listing on major search engine with keyword like “Canggu Villas” or “Villas in Canggu”. After analyze, i think this will be hard optimize by the choosen SEO service company, why ?

First, there’s no content on front page for search engine to crawl, Yes that’s a flash intro as a front page. Actually this problem can be solve with addition content text below the animation without alleviate the fancy of flash intro, please look TheVillas.Net, i found their webmaster using White Hat technique, they don’t hide the text content even in the first sight we don’t know TheVillas.Net has a text content. Smart!

Second, like my friend Wahya said there’s no textual link or image link to interior of website. Yes, the designer using flash button to enter the site. If they still concern with the SEO, i think they must add an addition button or textual link, and make it to be enter button or to be link to sitemap page.

Three, the developer still using Frame! i don’t know why they decided to use Frame, whereas we can using CSS and Javascript to hide some box and the page still show the whole content.

The good SEO service company isn’t guarantee the website can be #1 rank with choosen keyword, but they are will provide report of increasing progress of traffic Rank and popularity, and for sure the client must agree with anything what SEO service company needs, even any litle change of design.

Bro…so sorry we can’t handle that project. I am agree with you. If your boss wanna keep that design, just do it like TheVillas.net. I suggest you, please find some copywriter hahahaha

Sebetulnya kan filosofi Search Engine itu sederhana banget. Yang dibutuhkan orang adalah informasi yang relevan dan disajikan dengan format yang mudah diikuti dan tampilan yang menarik. Jadi keywordnya tetep INFORMASI.

Kalo website dibikin full-flash, artinya terbalik dari filosofi itu. Informasi yang sesungguhnya diperlukan pengunjung justru DISEMBUNYIKAN dibalik karya seni digital. Namanya karya seni kan soal selera, sementara informasi adalah kebutuhan. Mending orang suka, kalo nggak, mana mau kemudian dia nyari lebih jauh di website tersebut. Fakta ini terkonfirmasi dengan statistik, website full-flash memanfaatkan Ad-Words, ternyata bouce rate nya jauh lebih tinggi.

Kalo mau menambah visual appeal, kan bisa dikombinasikan antara content yang SEO friendly dengan komponen flash. Mungkin main picture dengan flash tapi menu tetep anchor text biasa yang dikontrol CSS.

Frame tuh kuno banget … 1990, pre-historic in internet age :)

Flash, emang bener, cuman buat presentasi aja bagusnya. Kalo buat SEO parah banget.

Nice blog, just found it.

Historically, it has been difficult for search engines to extract content (text & links) from Flash (.swf) files. Subsequently, most Flash-based content on the web has been inaccessible to search results, with Flash based websites not receiving solid rankings in the search results.

The good news is: Google is now crawling and indexing Flash content as of July.
( http://www.internet-marketing.web.id/seo/google-now-crawling-and-indexing-flash-content/ ). Obviously, there’s a lot of additional work and parsing that needs to be done to make it optimized, but the possibility now exists.

As far as using Frames goes, that is for dinasours.
